Haji Awel Abdi

 

Haji Awel Abdi is 44-years-old man with a family of eight, He lives in Malka arba Kebele, Harena Buluq district. He had been a PSNP beneficiary for the last 3 years, before being targeted under the BER II project in 2020.

Awel is now among the irrigation water beneficiaries under the project. The group has six members and is legally established. They benefited from the project due to their willingness to engage in the group, the availability of irrigable land from nearby water point and their traditional experience in irrigation. The selection of beneficiaries as well site selection is undertaken together with district irrigation development office.

The project supported the group with different kinds of vegetable seeds, such as tomato, carrot,, and onion; water pumps with full accessory, double delivery tube, provision of agronomic practice training and continuous technical support. After the project support, Awel has started irrigating his agricultural land located adjacent to Bidimo River using modern irrigation technologies like a water pump, and by using improved vegetable seeds. Before the BER II project support, he used to produce a maximum of two times a year, most often only one, and obtained small amounts of products. Currently, he started producing a minimum of three times per year, and he produces three times higher than before from a given land. In one season, he is able to produce vegetables and sale as shown in the table below.

Awel, now purchased three oxes with 112,000 Birr from the sale of vegetables and by adding income from other sources. Finally, he said, “Thanks to Allah, my family livelihood is now changing to better conditions and getting a better income than before due to support from Bale BER -II project.
